Pavitra Chalam (Founder|Director) and Akshay Shankar (CEO|Director) are award winning filmmakers who use film to evoke empathy and inspire action. Pavitra has made over a hundred films and has been recognized for her outstanding contribution as a change-maker. Akshay chose to leave an accomplished career at Goldman Sachs to turn writer/director and shape the creative vision of CurleyStreet.

Our clients come to us for fresh independent thinking for their brand. When we come on board, we begin by understanding the communication challenge, we then formulate the creative strategy, conceptualize, write screenplays and finally produce an evocative film.
We also produce independent films on real/complex content ranging from human rights to art.
Films are commonly viewed as devices of escapism. CurleyStreet was founded to achieve the opposite. We observed there were too many compelling stories around us that had no way of being told. The challenge was to create a storytelling style that would captivate and persuade audiences to engage with the subject. This is our commitment and our aesthetic.
Managing perception. Our founding vision for CurleyStreet was rooted in our passion for non-fiction and realism. While this helped bring inspiring social-justice stories and clientele to us, the advertising perception was that real emotional stories were not engaging enough to lure target audiences.
Our challenge was to bring our form of storytelling into mainstream advertising. We stuck with our vision and continued to collaborate with organizations and entrepreneurs’ looking to build deeper customer engagement through real impact stories. As it turned out, brands began to observe that their customers were craving a more transparent approach to contemporary advertising in India. Evidence based, highly credible, emotional human testimonials of products and services were in demand. We found both brands and creative agencies were reaching out to us because of our expertise with understanding the power of the human narrative. As a result, we worked with brands like Flipkart, GoDaddy, Urban Ladder, Ola Cabs and Prestige Constructions.
1. This Thursday, the 25th of May, CurleyStreet will release #UNFRAMED on Facebook and YouTube. It is a 5 episode non-fiction web-series that unboxes the lives and stories of independent artists living in Bangalore, taking on unconventional mediums of expression.
2. We will be completing our feature documentary Rooting for Roona - a film that fights for the health of the Indian Child and captures the incredible story of Baby Roona Begum, born with Hydrocephalus, a birth defect caused by a build-up of fluid in the brain leading to massive swelling of the head. We have followed her story for 4 years.
3. We will be launching our new YouTube channel in July. The channel is called Awokin. Our content speaks about the elephant in the room. Topics that people either ignore, might have felt but are unable to accept or are blind to. Awokin is a combination of ‘awoke’ and ‘kin’. Awoke - waking up to an important reality. Kin - we are all connected by the poetry of survival. The content will be short form and mobile friendly.
